Eddie Skratch & DC first hooked up through mutual associates in 1991 at the long-running Solid Bond night at the University of Huddersfield. Combining a shared love of classic hip hop, soul and deep funk regular guest appearances followed at other notable northern funk nights including Dig! and The Cooker (Leeds) and Spice (Bradford). In 2000 the duo set up hip hop night Dusted! at both Revolution Bar and The Camel Club.
A fruitful move into production led to the release of the ‘Flaming Flares EP’ released through easydb (Downboy Records) in 1997. The EP combined old skool b-boy homage with a love of raw 70’s funk, with ‘Dusty’s Sermon’ subsequently selected to appear on the compilation Big Beat Elite Complete 3 (Lacerba). The track picked up good critical response and airplay from Radio 1, and appeared in the tv series Dream Team on Sky TV.
In 2003 Eddie Skratch and DC formed Slowburn and contributed the track ‘All We Need’ for the ‘Funky Sounds of The Underground’ Vol 2 CD Compilation (Chocolate Fireguard) picking up choice plays in Canada and Europe. Slowburn went onto provide the ‘Boys From The Hudd’ remix treatment to Kava Kava’s ‘Bankjob’ 12”(Chocolate Fireguard), receiving rave response and plays from Freddy Fresh et al.
Further credits for Eddie Skratch came through production or scratch duties with Supercharger, Quantic, and collaborations with UK hip-hop maestro Evil Ed on the Tournament EP’s 1 and 2 and LP ‘The Enthusiast’.
Emerging from a six year residency at ‘Across The Trax’ in Huddersfield’s Camel Club, Eddie Skratch, DC and Marc Kershaw (The Underground Set) joined forces to form the Random Heroes project. The debut recording came through their own label ‘Shove It’ with a double A-side 7" aiming to satisfy beat-lovers, soul heads and funk diggers alike. The release showcased melodic sweet soul vocals with the mid-tempo beats of ‘C’mon & Get It’, and the unadulterated psychedelic funk rock of ‘Out Of Reality’.
The single came to the attention of Australian production dynamo Dave McKinney (Flow Dynamics/Rhibosome) who offered to remix ‘C’Mon & Get It’ for release on Freestyle Records FSR 026 (subsequently released in August 2005 containing the Flow Dynamics and Soul Harmonics Remixes plus the original mix).
